What is Wedding Insurance & Why Would You Need It?

In the past few months, Americans, and people across the globe, have learned the hard way that disasters can strike when you least expect it. No bride or groom wants to consider that their day could be upended by an act of nature, a theft, or even a global pandemic. Unfortunately, sudden cancellations happen, gowns get ruined, and gifts can be stolen. These instances are when wedding insurance could come in handy. Let’s take a look at the benefits of wedding insurance and why you may want to consider it for your big day.

What Is Wedding Insurance?

Couples have invested quite a bit of time and money into making planning their wedding day.  Wedding insurance is a means of  financially protecting a couple against a variety of unexpected problems that could tarnish the special day as well as put undue stress on a bank account. Every policy is different, but most cover the same general items.

Why Is Wedding Insurance Needed?

The Knot, an all-in-one wedding planner and the #1 wedding app explains that there are many reasons why a couple would need access to wedding insurance. For example, what would you do if your limo driver doesn’t show up and you have to book another one the morning of the wedding for three times the price?

Another example is what if the groom’s custom-made tuxedo is lost in airport baggage, and he has to buy a new one the day before the wedding?

Other examples of potential issues that could be resolved include: fluke accidents with a bride’s gown, the cake, a DJ that gets sick, or deliveries that are lost in the mail. These are the types of wedding day financial losses that wedding insurance can help to protect against.

What Does Wedding Insurance Cover?

The first thing to do is talk to your insurance agent about what specifically will and will not be covered. Most wedding insurance has specific items that are covered and those that are not.

According to the New York Time, most wedding insurance cover issues with: the ceremony and reception site, adverse weather conditions, a vendor no show or vendor error, military activation, sickness, or injury. Most wedding insurance agents will tell you that things that are not part of coverage are: a change of heart and/or jewelry associated with the wedding. Most rings would be covered under the couple’s renters or home insurance coverage but check with your individual agent to be sure.
